The Commercial Fishing Occupational Safety Training Project Grants (T03) program provides federal funding to enhance the quality, reach, and effectiveness of safety training for U.S. commercial fishermen. The program is jointly supported by NIOSH and the U.S. Coast Guard to reduce occupational injuries, fatalities, and hazards in one of the nation’s most dangerous industries.
Purpose and Use:
Funded projects support the development and delivery of occupational safety and health training programs that:
- Address the specific safety needs of commercial fishermen
- Increase access to training through improved frequency, geographic reach, and dissemination channels
- Deliver culturally, linguistically, and educationally appropriate training materials
- Strengthen partnerships and delivery mechanisms to improve adoption and impact of safety practices
Projects should focus on practical, applied training that can be effectively implemented within fishing communities.
Eligibility:
Eligible applicants include:
- State governments
- County governments
- City or township governments
- Special district governments
- Federally recognized Native American tribal governments
- Public and Indian housing authorities
- Independent school districts
- Public and state institutions of higher education
- Private institutions of higher education
- Nonprofits (with or without 501(c)(3) status)
- Native American tribal organizations (other than federally recognized governments)
- Faith-based or community-based organizations
- Regional organizations
- Small businesses
- Other for-profit organizations
- Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs)
- Bona fide agents of state or local governments (with required legal documentation)
Geographic Requirement:
Projects must support U.S. commercial fishermen. No specific state or regional restriction applies, provided the proposed activities serve eligible U.S.-based fishing communities.
